Reach Out and Read

Kaiser Permanente's partnership with Reach Out and Read ensures that books are part of a healthy childhood.

Reach Out and Read is a national pediatric literacy program that seeks to make literacy promotion a standard part of well-child care beginning at six months of age. Children who grow up with books and who are read to during the first years of life are more likely to love reading and start school ready to learn.

Kaiser Permanente is the first health care system to adopt the Reach Out and Read model. In 2006, the Reach Out and Read National Center recognized Kaiser Permanente with the National Literacy Champion Award.

Currently, the Reach Out and Read program at Kaiser Permanente Northern California includes:

  • 47 Kaiser Permanente pediatric clinics as nationally-recognized Reach Out and Read sites, and 2 satellite sites.
  • Over 500 Kaiser Permanente pediatric providers across the Northern California Region providing guidance to children and their parents during well-child visits.
  • In 2009, an estimated 230,000 books will be distributed to children in KP clinics.
  • To date in 2009, we are distributing over 18,000 books in the communities we serve through donations and community events.
