Steve Zatkin

Retiring senior vice president and general counsel of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals

Some people seem to be born leaders. In 1956, 10 year old Steve Zatkin, student body president of Montclair elementary School, was selected to cut the ribbon for the opening of California Highway 13 between Oakland and San Leandro.

In 1978, after nine years as a consultant to the California legislature on health related legislation, Steve joined Kaiser Permanente, where he has made a genuine difference for 32 years.

Steve has a profound understanding of why we are a nonprofit charitable organization, and why we must always remain true to that core principle. He also has a relentless focus on improving not only the health of our members, but the health of our neighborhoods, our communities, our nation, and the world.

This strong commitment to helping our communities, combined with his expert legal counsel and his deep knowledge of public policy, have helped make our Community Benefit activities possible. Without Steve, we wouldn’t be what we are today.

We will miss him greatly, but more importantly, we wish Steve a long and happy retirement with his wife, Vicki, also a key Kaiser Permanente employee, and their family.

Thank you, Steve.
