Named in honor of Dr. David Lawrence, former CEO of Kaiser Permanente and lifelong advocate of improving health, our community service awards recognize individuals and groups that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to improve the health of our communities. The DLCSA aims to honor exemplary service and also to inspire others toward community service.
Harvey Bograd, MD, Colorado: The "go-to" doctor for community service in Denver, he is a champion of care for the uninsured at the state and local level and exceptionally devoted to improving access to care for the Latino community.
Vickie Johnson, So California: Through founding and running the "Ladies First & II Hype Dance, Drill, and Gospel Team of Pacoima," she has been a volunteer coach, mentor, and surrogate mother for close to 1,000 at-risk African American teens for over 23 years.
Brigid McCaw, MD, No California: Leader in the prevention of domestic violence, she leverages the programming and materials developed at KP to influence policy at the national, state and local level among other health systems, community clinics and NGO's.
Operation Access KP Team, No California: Provides free low-risk outpatient surgeries for uninsured patients. Co-founded by KP physician Doug Grey, this model is spreading to other regions within KP, it is being studied by the American Academy of Surgeons for national application.
Jeannie Hickey, RN, No California: Champion for diabetic health and education through several organizations including the Diabetic Youth Foundation; co-founder of Dogs4Diabetics.
Tammy Sabad, Colorado: "Volunteering for one person at a time" over and over again and inspired by the work of Mother Theresa, she serves the homeless, uninsured vulnerable population of Denver through numerous organizations.
Donna Ching, RN, Northwest: Champion for reduction of hunger in Oregon through leadership in the Oregon Food Bank and its Child Hunger Initiative, she is a "soup to nuts" volunteer.
KP Kids in Dynamic Shape, So California: Comprehensive effort to reduce childhood obesity developed initially for KP members and now provided to the community at no cost through volunteer efforts.
Radiology Skid Row Homeless Health Care Initiative, So California: Providing timely Radiology services to the homeless population of Los Angeles' Skid Row, helps manage communicable diseases.
Chinese American Coalition for Comprehensive Care, No California: Culturally sensitive end-of-life care information for the Chinese American community.
Ruth Conley, So California: Champion for the Watts community, she was most recently pivotal in the creation of the Watts Farmers Market.
Carolyn Rose, LVN, So California: Co-founded MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) in her garage 37 years ago and built it into the state's 9th largest food bank and a huge community multi-service center.
They work in clinics in LA. They provide dental services to kids in San Diego. They volunteer in residential care homes for the elderly. They see a need and start a clinic for the underserved in Portland. They are the winners of the 2006 David Lawrence Community Service Award.
As you Learn more about the work of these exceptional individuals and groups, we encourage you to think about how you can become involved in community service in ways that build upon your personal and professional passions and talents. It's also not too early to begin considering whether you know of a special individual or group who may qualify for the 2008 DLCSA. Help us recognize and reward your co-workers who inspire you with the ways they contribute to the health of our communities. The nomination process takes place in the spring each year.
